Starting the Scouting journey: joining the Lion Den

Lion Badge of Rank

Children in Kindergarten

Welcome to Scouts BSA! Lion Scouts is the beginning of what we hop will become a lasting relationship between your child and the Scouting program.

The Lion Cub program is designed to meet the needs of the youngest members of the BSA. Your child will be greatly helped by your enthusiastic participation in the many parent-child activities that are the core of the Lion Cub program.

Your child is a Member of a Lion Den…

  • The Lion den is made up of no more than 8 children who are in kindergarten or 5 years old.
  • The den meets one to two times a month. One of the den meetings each month is a fun and educational field trip.
  • Parents must accompany their Lion to all meetings.
  • The Lion den has a parent guide, Lion Guide, to help parents with planning den activities.

Your child is a Member of a Cub Scout Pack…

  • A pack consists of several dens with children from the different age groups. Dens meet together once a month for a pack meeting.
  • The Cubmaster leads the monthly pack meeting, but each den will have a part in the pack meeting.
  • Some months, the pack meeting will have special themes such as Pinewood Derby, Blue & Gold Banquet, or guest speakers. Other months may be devoted to recognizing the Scouts for the projects they have completed by the presentation of belt loops and activity pins or rank advancements.

In Scouting, advancement is the process by which a member meets certain requirements and earn recognition. Children in Cub Scouting work on advancements with their families and at den meetings.

Lion Cub Scouts Complete Adventures

To advance, Lions complete Lion Adventures. As these are completed, they are awarded stickers to mark their progress.

Lion’s Honor
The Lion Scouts will learn the tradition of their den and the pack.

Fun on the Run
Eating well and getting rest and exercise will help the Lion stay strong and healthy as well.

Animal Kingdom
The Lion Scouts should learn ways to contribute to the “lion” pride (family).

Mountain Lion
Lions will learn how to be respectful to animals and nature and the idea that they should only take pictures and only leave footprints.

King of the Jungle
The Lion Scouts will learn what it means to be a good citizen, what it means to be a leader, and learn the parts of the flag ceremony.
Required Adventures

Once a scout completes the requirements for the five adventures, they will be eligible to receive their Lion rank and can move on to completing more adventures.

Lion Cub Scouts Work on Elective Adventures…

After your child has earned the Lion badge, they can earn more stickers by completing elective adventures outlined in their adventure book. The wide variety of adventures help broaden a child’s horizons and reinforce the aims of Scouting. Electives provide advancement opportunities and recognition for your child until they are eligible to begin work on the Tiger rank (children in first grade or 7 years old).

I’ll Do It Myself
The Lion Scouts will learn skills by watching older siblings or adult partners, learn to take care of themselves and their personal belongings, and increase autonomy among the Lions.

Pick My Path
In this adventure, the lions will learn how to be a friend, learn to understand how choices and their outcomes affect others, and learn acceptable responses to emotions.

Gizmos and Gadgets
The Scouts will learn about different gadgets and gizmos that are designed to be time-saving devices and others that are designed just for fun.

On Your Mark
This adventure helps reinforce being a good sport while playing fun games and sharing time with their adult partner.

Build It Up, Knock It Down
Here, Lions will learn that life is a series of choices and understand that mistakes can happen or things may not go as planned, but it is important to keep going and keep trying.

Ready, Set, Grow
The Lion Scouts will learn basic gardening skills and understanding different types of gardens. They will also be exploring where some food comes from.

Rumble in the Jungle
Physical activity helps you stay healthy and develop physical skills. The Lions will also learn that games have rules and that fairness requires all to follow the rules. They will also understand being respectful and when it is appropriate to be loud, quiet, or silent.
